great athmosphere, I could imagine hearing this in a stanley cubrick film ^^ but seriously, you proved a talent for creating a deep and colourful ambiance. There are alot of pictures coming to my mind listening to this. very good!

You're maybe young but you created something that's sounding very good and well composed. Keep it going, I think you will do a lot more crazy stuff in the future.

Oh and I liked the melodies in the intro. they gave the song a lot more character.

"Cherry blossoms..."

Great work Gravey!
I listended to both versions and must say you truly improved the piece with your work. The only thing that I noticed was your piece lacks of some little velocity dynamics the original version has. especially when it should get more quite. I think that the contrabass is guilty for that, cause it doesn't change its volume or am I wrong?
This has been said the entire song is wonderful. I wonder if this is an japanese composition? The percussions and little details really brought the missing piece of the puzzle. I think you did a superb job!

5/5 and 9/10 cause it isn't your own composition =P

Author's Response:

Well, I tried to have my additions follow the original dynamics to an extent. But sometimes I had them go the opposite direction dynamically, so you are right to an extent with the velocity comment. With the addition of the full ensemble/orchestra behind the quartet, it was pretty hard to get as quiet in certain areas as the original and keep everything in balance.

I'm glad you like this piece. I kinda thought it would be right up your alley. ;-)

Thanks for the review!

Hey Gravey!

If this is the product of just one night session I have to say you're not a human being^^ this is very well written from the slight piano in the beginning to the crescendo in the end. There's only one point that I found that could be improved. The piano chords in the beginning could be softer to support the beautiful melody in a better way. They're just a bit too hard.

The other parts are perfectly in shape and dynamics, I love the little details and characterful progressions that you create. respect. more please.

Author's Response:

Haha! Yea, this took about five hours to write and produce. I work quickly. Mainly because once I get to a certain point, my computer can't handle anything else. If and when I can afford a new pc I'll really be able to make some great stuff. ;-)

You have a point with the piano in the beginning. I might edit that, or I might not. It takes me half an hour just to load up the session now, so I'm not crazy about going back in and editing it. But I'll think about it. :-P

Glad you liked the song. And I'm proud to say I have earned your respect my friend. A great compliment if I've ever been given one.

Thanks for the song!

a very warm and mellow piece. it's a good thing that you kept the strings in the back and let the keys speak, cause they speak a lovely language.
keept up the good work!

I really enjoy the progressions and melody lines you come up with. you got some high quality orchestra samples, but that's not the point. how you use what you got makes it all a very very tasteful and enjoyable thing. this my third or fourth song from you that's in my fav list and you are the first composer that makes me download a song from newgrounds.

viel erfolg weiterhin, ich kann nur für dich hoffen, dass du es schaffst bei einer großen produktion mitzuwirken. die fähigkeiten dazu hast du auf jeden fall.

Den Knoppende Lærlingen

"very enjoyable"

man, I waited some time for a piece from you like this! the hole thing has a lot of character, the piano draws wonderful colours and figures. it feels very jazzy, it would sound great if there would've been a contrabass pizzcato for the rythm in some parts. I felt like the snare could be a bit more in the foreground, the hihat kind of covers it in some parts.
man I enjoyed it, it shows your skills at the piano again, cause you succeed in speaking with your instrument.

One question. What's the title in english?

greetings

July 18, 2009

Author's Response:

Naawwwwww....Thanks bud! I'm blushing! ;-)

I agree, it has a jazzy sorta feel to it. I thought about adding some contrabass throughout the song, but it just did not really work out. Either it was too much, or it simply seemed out of place. I wanted the piano to be the focus of the song, and I ended up deciding that the contrabass just wasn't a good fit in this piece.

That being said, I'm glad you liked the piano so much. It was definitely a lot of work to get just right, but most assuredly worth it.

The title in English is "The Budding Apprentice." The piano represents the apprentice frantically at work, while the orchestra represents the guiding hands of the master craftsman. Always steady, strong, and sturdy, just what is needed to keep the apprentice on track. That is where the name came from.

Thanks for the review bud!

I like this one. you made a good use of the battle samples here, especially the marching sound. I think you could've worked more with them in your percussion line, I could imagine mg salves for it's support.. chills came with the part starting at 01:16, mostly because of the choir. I was pleased to hear some odd cycle starting at 00:23, not that standart 4/4.
oh and there's only one thing that really annoys me...that fruity destortion guitar sample...dude...no way.. xD
but as a summary this piece is very enjoyable. keep it up man.

July 5, 2009

Author's Response:

Actually, the guitar itself is from a Nintendo sound font I found. The original guitar literally sounds like it came straight out of an Super NES game. And I was forced to used fruity distortion on it, but for what I had to work with it turned out all right.

I actually found a shitty pc VST rip-off of AmpFarm. (After mastering this song of course. -_-) But it takes up so much cpu when using it, so I'll have to use it sparingly in the future. Right now though, I'm looking for a decent guitar VST. Know of any by chance?

Thanks for checking out the song. I'm glad you were diggin it! :-D

"the combination works"

date: July 2, 2009

hey gravey,

unfortunatly I couldn't take some time to review your song yesterday, but I do it now. the intro is interesting and builds up in a good way, maybe a little pad or something would fit here in the back. when the action starts around 01.00 I was pleased with the sound except with the high pitched synth. I think it's too loud and screames to hard over your nice string line. when piano, synth and strings are playing it feels a little too much on the ear. I think you could improve this with some accurate mixing, too.
the percussion is well placed and fitting the hole song through, you could send some praise to Kaizer here. ^^

Well I am glad to hear you hold your composition level, cause it sounded very interesting and kinda unique. I think I don't have to mention that you are pretty professional with the piano.. keep it up bud.

greetings

July 2, 2009

Author's Response:

Thanks bud!

Your points all have merit, especially how when the piano, synth, and strings are playing together they flat out scream their parts. I noticed that when I mixed the final version, and I kinda liked the sound actually. I mixed this so it would be pretty in your face, and I wanted there to be a bit of an edge to it as well.

So I left the high ends pretty strong, even though I noticed how it really is intense for the ears. Normally I don't do that, but for some reason I just liked it with this song. So you are definitely right, when all the high end instruments are playing together they really belt out their parts.

And the percussion is badass for sure. I gotta figure out how to write decent percussion sometime. Ah, but I always got Kaizer to have my back. ;-)

Thanks for the great review my friend! Always appreciated!
